Haakon Superfoods And Juice

Haakon Superfoods and Juice which first opened in Raffles Holland V demonstrates a wholehearted endeavor to nourish both body and palate in a manner synonymous with the high protein, low carb Scandinavian dining philosophy: always fresh, healthy and tasty. Fatty fish, lean cuts of beef and chicken, dark colored bread full of grains, root vegetables and an assortment of fruits therefore feature prominently in the menu, these being suitably paired with chosen spices and herbs to bring out a medley of naturally delightful flavors. Health conscious gastronomers, it is surely time to assemble.

What knocked our socks off:

The green curry lite with chicken and rice was masterfully whipped up in our opinion, where gently spiced chicken breast slices adorn a bed of fluffy brown rice set adrift in a moat of specially concocted low-calorie green curry. The chewy meat worked out rather splendidly with the nutty textured grains, while the curry itself was densely aromatic without any hint of dairy doing the heavy lifting. Our only regret was that the portion served could have been a tad more generous.

Folks extremely conscious about their waistlines would be sold on the delectable chicken pesto salad which comprises herbed chicken breast tossed in a lukewarm creamy spinach relish together with baby tomatoes, mushrooms, pickled radish and mesclun greens. Cold tabbouleh (chopped parsley, bulgur wheat plus light drizzle of olive oil) is also added - a crumbly, tasty augment of the already colorful harvest of ingredients.

We also couldn't say enough good things about their classic acai bowl, a voluminous sculpture of organic frozen acai blend sitting atop a chia seed pudding base with strawberries, blueberries, kiwi pieces, banana slices, almonds and gourmet granola embedded on the edges. This antioxidant blockbuster was an avalanche of sensations: crunchy and sweet at first, frosty and refreshing (with a tinge of tartness) in the middle and somewhat frothy in conclusion. Another version, the nut butter and acai bowl which came slightly less stacked and featured chunks of almond butter was no slouch either; we devoured everything in a matter of minutes.

If you are a brunch person, then the Smørrebrød - an open-faced sandwich built on a thin layer of dense sourdough rye bread comes highly recommended. We settled for two different varieties - scrambled eggs + shrooms as well as steak + shrooms, of which we preferred the former a wee bit more.

Scrambled Eggs + Shrooms Smørrebrød (1 for $8.90, 2 for $16.90, 3 for $24.90)

Steak + Shrooms Smørrebrød (1 for $8.90, 2 for $16.90, 3 for $24.90)

What didn't work out:

Our main beef with the steak 'n shrooms dish was that it could nary satisfy our carnivorous urges; too little cow and too much garden in the overall picture led to us chomping tiredly on salad leaves for a long while after the non significant serving of red meat presented was wolfed down in the blink of an eye. Oh and dial down on the acidity of the accompanying vinaigrette already!

Steak N' Shrooms ($13.90)

Other items sampled but turned out to be non-events:

Umami Tofu Zoodles ($10.90)
