Whole Earth
Four-time Michelin Bib Gourmand awardee Whole Earth is putting space between itself and the hackneyed meatless schtick beguiling veganism these days, electing instead to promulgate virtuous sounding "plant-based" Peranakan-Thai fare (cooked with oodles of love so we've heard) that predominantly fixate on grains, greens and beans.
Nestled amidst shophouses along a perceivably muted stretch of Peck Seah Street within the Tanjong Pagar conservation area, this popular vegetarian restaurant's once dingy, somewhat fetid interiors traded up 3 years ago to an industrial-chic aesthetic couched in turquoise, wood and grey. A homey ambience, fastidious waitressing plus above decent food ensue, possibly granting the discerning diner just cause for stepping through.
Whole earth opens daily from 11.30am-3pm (last order at 2.30pm), 5.30pm-10.30pm (last order at 9.15pm).
What knocked our socks off:
The arboraceous Enchanted Forest held us spellbound: plump monkey head mushrooms frolicked in a sauce concocted using angelica root and wolfberries, effusing serendipitous succulence against uber green, crunchy broccoli clusters.
Enchanted Forest ($23)
The Penang Rendang was also magnificent in its own right: velvety shiitakes bedaubed with an emollient, resolutely curried fiesta awakened olfactory senses through and through. If there's one dish you must definitely try then this is it, cut and dried.
Penang Rendang ($22)
What didn't work out:
The big-assed plate of Signature Olive Brown Rice featured light, nutty grains most unfortunately baptized by an anaemic "wok hei" quintessence, thus begetting flat and muzzled vibes. Might the mess sergeant on duty have gotten away with practiced insouciance in the kitchen? Hmm.
Signature Olive Brown Rice ($11/16)
Other item(s) sampled but turned out to be non-event(s):
Handmade Yam Treasure Ring ($28)
Crispy Golden Oats ($17)
