Singaporeans' enduring love affair with mu kratha (Thai style barbeque steamboat eaten from a bifurcated skillet/soup trough contraption) has over time spurred countless mookata establishments which, whether authentic or otherwise, sling richly varied depictions: traditional binchōtan-fired, unorthodox (think salted egg, winter melon, even durian flavoured broths), sheer vegan, muslim-friendly and so forth. On this occasion we take a gander at a relatively new player, Phuket Town Mookata that threw open doors last February.

Despite being domiciled within some blink-and-you-miss-it coffee shop, Phuket Town Mookata is slowly but surely turning heads due in no small part to its awe-inducing chef-d'oeuvre - the Mega Meat Mountain, an ingeniously agglutinated sextet of feistily seasoned pig and poultry layers deemed capable of satiating four (possibly five) carnivorous chowhounds altogether. As owner Andrew Lim himself reveals, all sauces alongside marinades are self-concocted and 100% undiluted, whilst them MSG-free soup bases come gilded with Chinese herbs for that added zing. Lest we forget, bovine fans can also check out the amped up Beef Volcano version @ $49.90.

Folks who aren't inordinately rapacious however may prefer mixing n' matching from one reasonably exhaustive ingredients list as appetites permit. Beyond mookata, closet instant noodle fiends will revel in knowing Phuket Town too serves Tom Yum Mama à la Bangkok's Jeh O Chula. Home delivery is available albeit for orders above $50; do note an additional $10 transportation cum administrative surcharge shall be levied accordingly.

Like many F&B proprietors, Andrew got thwacked by COVID-19 proper - courtesy of intermittent governmental restrictions galore till date. Nevertheless, a creative tenacity bore through, giving rise to his first franchise outlet at Tampines Street 11; tragically though this closed mere months later (26 Sep - 30 Nov 2020) amidst, well, let's just say partnership disagreements. Ambition momentarily scuttled, the man's down perhaps but not out......of moves that is, we hope.

Phuket Town Mookata opens daily from 6pm-1am except Tuesdays. For further enquiries please contact 8613 0826 (Whatsapp).
