Salted Caramel

Naming your ice cream store after the one flavour which endears to you most thumpingly smacks of earnest but contrived balderdash, nevertheless it's Salted Caramel owner Bernice Ong's raison d'ĂȘtre (as well as prerogative) for doing so. Started in 2011, this Upper Thomson Road-based scoopaplooza has been dutifully helping to keep the mercury at bay by serving up an omnium-gatherum of artisanal frozen dainties that run the gamut from tried and tested (pistachio, earl grey, salted caramel - like duh) to offbeat (blue milk, ispahan, stout & chocolate - unfortunately sold out during our visit); a second outlet along Lorong Kilat opened nearly 10 years later, around September 2020.

Salted Caramel @ Upper Thomson Road

What knocked our socks off:

The Waffle With Ice Cream (we couldn't resist gravitating towards both blue milk and espresso & caramel biscuits) sure bowled us over: earthily milky running somewhat roughshod through one humdinger of an unimpeachably crunchy, caffeinated sweet-o-rama, these when masticated with swathes of a hot cinnamon-y, pretzel-y waffle foundation meant paradisal was only inevitable.

Waffle + 2 Scoops of Blue Milk And Espresso & Caramel Biscuits ($14)

Other item(s) sampled but turned out to be non-event(s):

Waffle Bowl + 2 Scoops of Horlicks Tim Tam And Salted Caramel ($9.50)

Note: Prices subject to change without prior notice. Kindly clarify with outlet before visiting or ordering.

Merely Ice Cream

Started exactly ten years ago by Tham Ying Wai together with two former secondary school classmates, Merely Ice Cream is as straight shootin' as it sounds, selling pretty much, well, just ice cream (duh). Though the owners themselves will have folks made au courant of how fiendishly finicky they are about what goes into their heat-beating creations.......

Originally an online bakery business that launched only last year, Butterspace aspires to bigger things seemingly hastily, having already opened its first physical outlet on 21 June. Beyond hawking kitschy cookies, brownies, blah blah blah, this neo-ascetic hole in the wall doubles as ice cream parlour - folks may thus also momentarily licka'way the relentless tropical heat......
